Nuclear Deal





The growing energy demands of the Indian and Chinese economies have raised questions on the impact of global energy availability. The Bush Administration has concluded that an Indian shift toward nuclear energy is in the best interest for America to secure its energy needs of coal, crude oil, and natural gas. Moreover, the Bush administration insists that India's strong non-proliferation record and stable democracy further helped justify a nuclear pact with India while not providing Pakistan or others the same. Finally,The U.S. also expects that such a deal could spur India's economic growth and bring in $150 billion in the next decade for nuclear power plants, of which the US wants a share. It is India's stated objective to increase the production of nuclear power generation from its present capacity of 4,000 MWe to 20,000 MWe in the next decade.
Indian and American critics along with nuclear industry representatives and developmental economists have questioned each of the administration's claims. They have noted that U.S. nuclear vendors cannot sell any reactors to India unless and until India caps third party liabilities and or establishes a credible liablility pool to protect U.S. firms from being sued in the case of an accident or a terrorist act of sabotage against nuclear plants.
The Respect Developmental economic advising firm of Dalberg, which advises the IMF and the World Bank, moreover, has done its own analysis of the economic value of investing in nuclear power development in India. Their conclusion is that for the next 20 years such investments are likely to be far less valuable economically or environmentally than a variety of other measures to increase and economize electricity production in India. and also to stop or reduce the pollution by traditional usage of natural resources
Since the end of the Cold War, The Pentagon, along with certain U.S. ambassadors such as Robert Blackwill, have requested increased strategic ties with India and a de-hyphenization of Pakistan with India.
Mohammed ElBaradei, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, which would be in charge of inspecting India's civilian reactors has praised the deal as "it would also bring India closer as an important partner in the nonproliferation regime". However, members of the IAEA safeguards staff have made it clear that Indian demands that New Delhi be allowed to determine when Indian reactors might be inspected could undermine the IAEA safeguards system.
While India is self-sufficient in thorium, possessing 24% of the world's known and economically available thorium, it possesses a meager 1% of the similarly calculated global uranium reserves. Indian support for cooperation with the U.S. centers around the issue of obtaining a steady supply of sufficient energy to grow the economy.
Indian opposition to the pact centers around the concessions that would need to be made, as well as the likely de-prioritization of research into a thorium fuel-cycle if uranium becomes highly available given the well understood utilization of uranium in a nuclear fuel cycle.

Agreement

Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope




The Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope, or GLAST, is a space observatory used to perform gamma-ray astronomy observations from low Earth orbit. Its main instrument is the Large Area Telescope (LAT), with which astronomers mostly intend to perform an all-sky survey studying astrophysical and cosmological phenomena such as active galactic nuclei, pulsars, other high-energy sources and dark matter. Another instrument aboard GLAST, the GLAST Burst Monitor (GBM), will be used to study gamma ray bursts.
GLAST, which was launched aboard a Delta II 7920-H rocket at 16:05 GMT on 2008-06-11, is a joint venture of NASA, the United States Department of Energy, and government agencies in France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Sweden. On February 8, 2008 NASA announced it was seeking suggestions for a new name for GLAST that, "Will capture the excitement of GLAST's mission and call attention to gamma-ray and high-energy astronomy."GLAST includes two scientific instruments, the Large Area Telescope (LAT) and the GLAST Burst Monitor (GBM). The LAT is an imaging gamma-ray detector (a pair-conversion instrument) which detects photons with energy from about 30 million to about 300 billion electron volts (30 MeV - 300 GeV), with a field of view of about 20% of the sky; it may be thought of as a sequel to the EGRET instrument on the Compton gamma ray observatory. The GBM consists of 14 scintillation detectors (twelve sodium iodide crystals for the 8keV to 1MeV range and two bismut germanate crystals with sensitivity from 150keV to 30MeV), and can detect gamma ray bursts in that energy range across the whole of the sky not occulted by the EartThe key scientific objectives of the GLAST mission are:
To understand the mechanisms of particle acceleration in active galactic nuclei (AGN), pulsars, and supernova remnants (SNR).
Resolve the gamma-ray sky: unidentified sources and diffuse emission.
Determine the high-energy behavior of gamma-ray bursts and transients.
Probe dark matter and early Universe.
Search for evaporating primordial micro black holes [MBH] from their presumed gamma burst signatures [Hawking Radiation component].
NASA designed the mission with a five-year lifetime, with a goal of ten years of operations.


Global Warming




Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans since the mid-twentieth century, and its projected continuation.
The average global air temperature near the Earth's surface increased 0.74 ± 0.18 °C (1.33 ± 0.32 °F) during the hundred years ending in 2005. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concludes "most of the observed increase in globally averaged temperatures since the mid-twentieth century is very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogic (man-made) greenhouse gas concentrations"via an enhanced greenhouse effectt. Natural phenomena such as solar variation combined with volcanoes probably had a small warming effect from pre-industrial times to 1950 and a small cooling effect from 1950 onward.
These basic conclusions have been endorsed by at least thirty scientific societies and academies of science including all of the national academies of science of the major industrialized countries . While individual scientists have voiced disagreement with some findings of the IPCC, the overwhelming majority of scientists working on climate change agree with the IPCC's main conclusions.
Climate model projections summarized by the IPCC indicate that average global surface temperature will likely rise a further 1.1 to 6.4 °C (2.0 to 11.5 °F) during the twenty-first century. This range of values results from the use of differing scenarios of future greenhouse gas emissions as well as models with differing climate sensitivity . Although most studies focus on the period up to 2100, warming and sea level rise are expected to continue for more than a thousand years even if greenhouse gas levels are stabilized. The delay in reaching equilibrium is a result of the large heat capacity of the oceans.
Increasing global temperature will cause sea level to rise and is expected to increase the intensity of extreme weather events and to change the amount and pattern of precipitation . Other effects of global warming include changes in agricultural yields , trade routes, glacier retreat , species extinctions and increases in the ranges of disease vectors .
Remaining scientific uncertainties include the amount of warming expected in the future, and how warming and related changes will vary from region to region around the globe. Most national governments have signed and ratified the Kyoto Protocol aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but there is ongoing political and public debate worldwide regarding what, if any, action should be taken to reduce or reverse future warming or to adapt to its expected consequences.

Udaigiri Caves



Udaigiri caves is a archaeological site of antiquities and is located at 6 km from Vidisha between Bes and Betwa river.This site is mainly known for its ancient rock cut temples excavated in an isolated stand stone hill, which extends to a km long and 11o m high.There are 20 gupta cave shrine dated back to the period from 4th to 5th centuries A.D. Eighteen caves are of Hindu and 2 are of Jain.The caves are mostly small chambers , enshrining idols or images of various dynasties carved in to the rock of hill. The caves and other remains found at the site shows that the site has passed through the influence of Buddhism, Jainism and Hinduism those days.An inscription in one of these, states that it was produced during the reign of Chandragupta-2 (382-401 A.D), thus dating these caves to 4-5 A.D. The caves have been numbered according to the sequence in which they were excavated, particularly spectecural is cave 1 , which has a fontage adapted out of a natural ledge rock ,thus forming both the roof of the cella and its portico.Cave 5 in which lord Vishnu is depicted in his Varaha (Boar) incarnation holding aloft an one tusk the earth goddesses Prithvi. There is another sculpture of lord Vishnu in the reclining postures. Cave 9 has 2.5 m high pillars, long portico and pillared halls.Cave 7 was build for the personal use of king Chandragupta-2.Cave 20 has detailed Jain carving .All these caves have been cut in to a sandstone hill and have all the distinctive features that gave Gupta art its unique place.
